About Ottawa Greenbelt

The Ottawa Greenbelt is a protected natural area surrounding Canada’s capital city that offers a rich combination of forests, wetlands, and farmland, providing extensive outdoor recreation and natural refuge close to urban spaces.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Ottawa Greenbelt was established in the 1950s as a planning initiative to limit urban sprawl and preserve natural landscapes around Ottawa, Ontario. It encompasses over 20,000 acres of mixed forest, wetlands, agricultural land, and conservation areas, encircling the city with a broad corridor of green space. The Greenbelt includes several parks and conservation areas such as the Stony Swamp Conservation Area, Mer Bleue Bog, and the Shirley’s Bay area, each contributing unique ecological features. The area serves as critical habitat for wildlife including white-tailed deer, beavers, a variety of bird species like herons and owls, and supports many sensitive wetland ecosystems. Popular activities range from hiking, cycling, cross-country skiing, birdwatching, and horseback riding to fishing and canoeing on connected waterways. The Greenbelt features dozens of trails suitable for various skill levels, from short interpretive loops to longer cross-country routes. It also contains remnants of historical farmsteads and is near landmarks such as the Canadian Museum of Nature and the Experimental Farm. Its proximity to Ottawa’s urban core makes it highly accessible while providing a peaceful escape into nature, fostering environmental education and stewardship opportunities. The Greenbelt's role in conserving biodiversity and supporting urban sustainability continues to be a focus of local planning efforts.
