About Olive River National Park

Olive River National Park features diverse ecosystems along a pristine river corridor, offering visitors hiking, wildlife viewing, and tranquil paddling opportunities in Alabama’s coastal region.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Olive River National Park encompasses approximately 20,000 acres of protected land along the Olive River in southern Alabama, close to the Gulf Coast. The park preserves a mosaic of habitats including hardwood forests, pine flatwoods, wetlands, and tidal estuaries that sustain rich biodiversity. The Olive River itself winds slowly through the park, providing critical habitat for fish species, migratory birds, and amphibians. The park’s history includes Native American presence, early European settlers, and conservation efforts beginning in the mid-20th century to protect remaining intact riverine and coastal environments in the region. Recreation opportunities abound with over 35 miles of marked trails that traverse the interior forest, boardwalks through wetlands, and designated paddling routes on the slow-moving river. Visitors often seek birdwatching spots where species such as bald eagles, red-cockaded woodpeckers, and prothonotary warblers are frequently sighted. Notable landmarks include the historic Olive River Landing, a former steamboat stop, and the unique Cypress Hollow, a pristine swamp accessible by trail and water routes. The park’s quiet, low-elevation setting makes it attractive for camping, photography, and seasonal fishing. Due to its diverse environments, Olive River National Park attracts visitors interested in both gentle nature exploration and more challenging backcountry hikes. Ranger-led educational programs focus on coastal ecology and regional conservation. Its blend of natural beauty and relatively undisturbed habitats provides an important refuge for Alabama’s native plants and wildlife.
