Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
North Etiwanda Preserve comprises over 2,500 acres of natural open space located in San Bernardino County, California, near the cities of Rancho Cucamonga and Etiwanda. The preserve features a diverse landscape of sandstone formations, grassy hills, oak woodlands, and chaparral-covered slopes, characteristic of the eastern foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. Established primarily to protect local wildlife habitats and prevent urban sprawl, the area supports species such as mule deer, bobcats, rabbits, and a variety of bird species including red-tailed hawks and California quail. The preserve is managed by the San Bernardino County Regional Parks Department and is part of an interconnected greenbelt of protected lands linking to adjacent open space areas. Popular throughout the year, the preserve offers a well-maintained multi-use trail system catering mainly to hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. Trails range from easy valley walks to more challenging climbs with panoramic views of the Inland Empire basin and surrounding mountain ranges. Notable features include the Etiwanda Peak Trail which rewards visitors with sweeping vistas, and the North Ridge Trail running through oak woodland habitat. Access is convenient from local trailheads with parking available at designated lots. Visitors are attracted by the natural solitude close to urban centers, making it a destination for day-use outings, wildlife photography, and outdoor fitness activities in a preserved Southern California environment.
