About Morgan Run Natural Environment Area

Morgan Run Natural Environment Area is a protected forested landscape in Maryland renowned for its extensive trail system, trout fishing streams, and diverse habitats, offering visitors a peaceful setting for hiking, mountain biking, and wildlife viewing.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Morgan Run Natural Environment Area spans roughly 1,930 acres in northern Baltimore County, Maryland, forming part of the Loch Raven watershed. The area is characterized by mixed hardwood forests, gently rolling hills, and several clear, cold water tributaries that feed Morgan Run Creek, renowned for trout fishing. This natural area protects critical habitat for native wildlife, including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and an assortment of songbirds and amphibians. Established as a state natural environment area to conserve water quality and provide low-impact recreation, Morgan Run features more than 14 miles of multi-use trails that attract hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. The terrain offers moderate elevation changes, well-maintained singletrack paths, and primitive roadways woven through mature forests dominated by oak, hickory, and tulip poplar. Fishing enthusiasts come to Morgan Run for its stocked and wild trout populations, while bird watchers have opportunities to observe woodland species and migratory birds. The area does not support developed camping, preserving its quiet, undeveloped atmosphere. Visitors are drawn by the tranquil environment spread over a natural landscape shaped by centuries of forest growth and conservation efforts, making it a key outdoor destination within easy reach of Baltimore. Morgan Run is popular for day use year-round, though spring through fall remain peak seasons for trail activities and fishing.
