About Morecambe Bay

Morecambe Bay is the largest expanse of intertidal mudflats and sandflats in the United Kingdom, offering exceptional coastal wildlife habitats and unique tidal experiences.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Morecambe Bay is located on the northwest coast of England, extending across the counties of Lancashire and Cumbria. It is the largest estuarine bay in England and is recognized for its vast intertidal flats, saltmarshes, and sand dunes. The bay covers approximately 310 square miles and is fed by several rivers including the Lune, Kent, and Leven. The area is internationally important for wildlife, particularly birds; it is designated as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, a Special Protection Area (SPA), and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Morecambe Bay supports large populations of wading birds and wildfowl such as oystercatchers, curlews, and redshanks. Its unique geomorphology features rapidly shifting sands, tidal channels, and extensive saltmarshes. Historically, Morecambe Bay has been known for its dangerous quicksands and fast-rising tides, leading to long-standing traditions around safety guided by the Queen’s Guide to the Sands. Recreationally, the bay attracts bird watchers, walkers, and anglers. The magnificent views along the bay’s coastline, including the nearby Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, make it appealing for outdoor enthusiasts. Fishing and shellfish gathering also play an important cultural and economic role. The bay's proximity to towns such as Morecambe and Barrow-in-Furness makes it accessible for day excursions while offering opportunities for educational and ecological tours. Visitors should be aware of tidal patterns and weather conditions due to the bay’s dynamic environment.
