Lough Swilly is a deep, glacial fjord-like sea inlet on the northwest coast of Ireland, stretching approximately 15 miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean. The Special Protection Area (SPA) encompasses extensive intertidal mudflats, saltmarshes, sand dunes, and rocky shores, providing a mosaic of habitats crucial for a wide variety of bird species, particularly migratory and wintering waterfowl and waders.
