Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Heritage Rail Trail County Park follows the old Northern Central Railway corridor, spanning approximately 13.3 miles between the towns of Cockeysville and Ashland in Baltimore County, Maryland. Converted from a railroad line commissioned in the mid-19th century, the trail preserves important cultural and transportation history while providing outdoor recreation opportunities for residents and visitors. The trail passes through rolling farmland, wooded areas, and small communities, providing diverse natural scenery and a glimpse into Maryland's transportation past. This rail trail serves hikers, bikers, and equestrians with its crushed limestone surface and gentle grades, making it accessible for all skill levels. Along the trail, visitors can encounter historical markers, old railroad bridges, and nearby heritage sites that tell the story of the region’s railroad development and Civil War history. Wildlife viewing opportunities include sightings of white-tailed deer, various songbirds, and seasonal wildflowers. The park connects residents of Baltimore County to open space within a suburban environment and supports healthy outdoor recreation practices. The Heritage Rail Trail is managed by Baltimore County Parks and is a valued regional resource for fitness, education, and historical appreciation. Its linear format makes it a prime destination for day-use activities, punctuated by access points with parking, benches, and informational signage.
