About Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands

The Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands comprise a critically important coastal wetland complex near Melbourne, providing vital habitat for migratory birds and diverse wildlife in a unique urban setting.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located along the southeastern coastline of Victoria, Australia, the Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands extend across approximately 261 hectares of freshwater and estuarine marshes, swamps, and wet meadows. This wetland complex includes Edithvale Wetlands and Seaford Wetlands, protected under the Ramsar Convention as wetlands of international importance. The area functions as a crucial stopover and feeding ground for numerous migratory bird species traveling along the East Asian–Australasian Flyway, including rare and threatened waterbirds such as the Australasian Bittern and Latham's Snipe. The wetlands feature a mix of open water, reeds, and sedges that support amphibians, reptiles, and native fish populations. Historically, these wetlands were subject to land reclamation and urban development pressures but have since been rehabilitated and conserved through joint efforts by government agencies and local communities. Visitors to the site can enjoy walking trails and viewing hides strategically placed to observe wildlife without disturbance. Educational signage highlights the ecological significance and bird species present. The Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands offer an accessible outdoor experience close to Melbourne, appealing to birdwatchers, naturalists, photographers, and those interested in environmental conservation. The surrounding parklands and picnic areas enhance visitor opportunities for relaxation amid natural surroundings.
