Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Belcarra Regional Park is located on the east side of Indian Arm, a fjord extending north from Burrard Inlet near Vancouver, British Columbia. The park encompasses forested hills, secluded beaches, and rugged shorelines, providing visitors with diverse habitats including coastal temperate rainforest and marine shoreline ecosystems. Historically, the area lies within the unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples. Acquired by Metro Vancouver to protect natural areas and resource values, Belcarra offers over 20 kilometers of trails that vary from easy strolls along the waterfront to more strenuous hikes through Douglas fir and western red cedar forests. Key recreation opportunities include hiking, mountain biking on designated trails, picnicking, wildlife observation, and kayaking along calm waters. Notable landmarks include Sasamat Lake, a popular swimming and paddle sports site, and Jug Island, accessible by kayak. The park’s scenic viewpoints provide panoramic views of Indian Arm and the Coastal Mountains. Visitors appreciate the park for its quiet nature escapes within close proximity to urban areas, family-friendly amenities, and the well-maintained trail network. Seasonal variations bring migratory birds and changes in wildflower blooms, enhancing the ecological richness visitors can experience.
