About McKenzie River Ranger District

The McKenzie River Ranger District is a scenic and diverse area within the Willamette National Forest, offering abundant opportunities for hiking, fishing, camping, and exploring volcanic landscapes along the McKenzie River corridor.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The McKenzie River Ranger District is a key administrative and recreational area within the Willamette National Forest in western Oregon. Encompassing a broad section of the Cascade Range, this district features a range of volcanic geology including lava flows, cinder cones, and remnants of ancient volcanic activity. The district is drained primarily by the McKenzie River, a popular destination for trout and salmon anglers, and a celebrated Wild and Scenic River known for its crystal-clear waters and rugged canyon scenery. Elevations in this district range from about 1,500 feet near the river valley to over 6,000 feet on surrounding ridges, supporting a diverse mix of Douglas fir, western hemlock, cedar, and a variety of understory plants. The area provides habitat for black bears, elk, deer, and numerous bird species. Historically, the McKenzie River corridor has been important for indigenous peoples and later European settlers, with the McKenzie Wagon Road serving as a major transportation route during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Modern visitors are drawn by well-maintained hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trails, as well as multiple campgrounds and scenic driving routes such as the McKenzie Pass-Santiam Pass Scenic Byway. Notable landmarks within the district include Tamolitch Blue Pool, the Clear Lake lava flows, and Sahalie and Koosah Falls. The district also offers winter snowshoeing and cross-country skiing opportunities. Overall, the McKenzie River Ranger District provides a balance of accessible outdoor recreation and preserved natural landscapes that appeal to families, anglers, and backcountry enthusiasts alike.
