Located in McHenry County, Illinois, Maple Ridge Forest Preserve encompasses over 1,000 acres of woodland, prairie, and wetland habitats. This preserve is managed by the McHenry County Conservation District and serves as an important green space amid suburban development. The preserve’s geography includes gently rolling hills, mature maple and oak forests, open meadows, and several small bodies of water, which provide excellent conditions for biodiversity. The area supports a wide array of wildlife, including white-tailed deer, red foxes, wild turkeys, and numerous bird species, making it a favored destination for birdwatchers and naturalists alike. Historically, this area was utilized by Native American tribes and later by early settlers who shaped the landscape. Today, visitors can enjoy over 15 miles of well-maintained hiking and mountain biking trails, including multi-use paths that connect different sections of the preserve. Notable landmarks within Maple Ridge include a scenic overlook providing panoramic views of the surrounding forest and wetlands, as well as a restored prairie area that showcases the region’s native plants.
