About Kloyo Forest Reserve

Kloyo Forest Reserve in Oregon offers expansive old-growth forests, diverse wildlife habitats, and a range of outdoor activities including hiking, mountain biking, and fishing.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Kloyo Forest Reserve is a federally protected National Forest located in the central Willamette Valley region of Oregon. Spanning over 60,000 acres of diverse ecosystems, the forest encompasses dense coniferous woodlands dominated by Douglas fir, western hemlock, and red cedar, alongside mixed hardwood stands. The reserve features gently rolling hills, river valleys, and several pristine streams that support native salmon and trout populations. Established in 1935, Kloyo Forest Reserve was designated to conserve critical habitats and provide sustainable timber resources while promoting recreational access for the public. The forest is historically significant for its connection to Native American tribes who relied on its resources, as well as to early 20th-century conservation efforts in the Pacific Northwest. Outdoor opportunities abound with more than 40 miles of multi-use trails suitable for hiking and mountain biking, as well as designated fishing areas along the Kloyo and Eola Rivers. Visitors enjoy scenic viewpoints at Eagle Ridge Lookout, a historic fire tower offering panoramic views of the Cascade Mountains, and Native plant interpretive trails that educate on the area’s ecology and cultural heritage. The reserve’s relatively mild climate supports a wide variety of wildlife, including black-tailed deer, Roosevelt elk, black bear, and numerous bird species such as northern spotted owls and pileated woodpeckers. Campgrounds and dispersed camping sites offer a range of overnight options, while well-maintained forest roads provide access to trailheads and fishing spots. Kloyo Forest Reserve appeals to outdoor enthusiasts looking for a less crowded natural setting rich in natural beauty, biodiversity, and outdoor recreation.
