About this landmark
Au Train Falls, located near Munising in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, is a captivating natural waterfall known for its multiple cascading tiers flowing over stunning sandstone rock formations. The falls are fed by the fast-moving Au Train River, which cuts through the forests and rocky terrain before reaching this scenic drop. What sets Au Train Falls apart in this region is its series of small cascades alongside a wider waterfall section, offering a dynamic visual and auditory experience for visitors seeking an authentic nature encounter.
The geological foundation here is primarily sandstone, which gives the waterfall’s cascading edges a distinctive layered appearance and rich earthy colors. Surrounding the falls, you’ll find dense hardwood and pine forests typical of northern Michigan, providing a lush green backdrop that changes dramatically through the seasons—from vibrant greens in summer to fiery hues in autumn.
While this waterfall isn’t as large as those in nearby Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Au Train Falls provides a quieter, less-crowded spot for nature appreciation and photography. Its accessible location encourages visitors to connect with Michigan’s native ecosystems in a serene setting. Historically, the river and its falls have been a resource and inspiration for local Indigenous communities and early settlers who valued the energy and bounty of natural waterways.
