Hafragilsfoss – Iceland's Wild Cascade

Hafragilsfoss – North Iceland’s Dramatic Waterfall

Hafragilsfoss is a striking waterfall located in the northern part of Iceland, within the impressive Vatnajökull National Park region. Positioned along the powerful Jökulsá á Fjöllum river, this waterfall stands out for its raw intensity and remarkable size, with a drop of 27 meters and a width of 91 meters. It is part of the famous Diamond Circle route, which draws visitors interested in Iceland’s stunning natural phenomena. What makes Hafragilsfoss special here is the way it channels enormous volumes of glacial meltwater into a rugged basalt canyon, highlighting the geological forces at work beneath Iceland’s surface. The canyon itself, carved over centuries, provides a dramatic backdrop that complements the sheer power of the falls.

Visitors often comment on the thick mist that rises from the base, sometimes soaking those who approach, adding a tactile sense of nature’s strength. The dark basaltic rock formations around the waterfall are remnants of ancient volcanic activity, illuminating the complex natural history of the area. The viewing platform on the west side offers the safest and most expansive perspectives of the waterfall plunging into the carved canyon below. Unlike its nearby neighbors, Dettifoss and Selfoss, Hafragilsfoss offers a quieter experience for those looking to appreciate a powerful cascade without overly large crowds.

A bit off the typical tourist path, Hafragilsfoss rewards visitors with spectacular photo opportunities, dynamic weather conditions, and a genuine connection to Iceland’s rugged wilderness. Whether appreciated from the lookout or approached on foot, its striking presence and the energy of the surrounding landscape make it a must-see for anyone visiting North Iceland.
