Georgetown, Colorado, offers a captivating glimpse into America’s mining past combined with striking natural scenery found in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. This small town in Clear Creek County stands out for its collection of well-preserved 19th-century buildings that reflect its silver mining boom history. Surrounded by towering peaks and pine forests, Georgetown provides visitors with both cultural richness and access to rugged outdoor landscapes.
A highlight of Georgetown is the Georgetown Loop Railroad, a steep and winding narrow-gauge train route famous for its dramatic engineering. Traveling this railway lets visitors enjoy sweeping views of deep canyons and mountain slopes—a unique way to experience Colorado’s alpine environment. The town itself reflects its mining heritage through historic storefronts, old saloons, and the Hamill House Museum, which showcases local history. The geology of the area includes silver-bearing veins and granite formations, evidence of the intense mining activity that started in the 1860s. Wildlife such as mule deer and occasional elk sightings add to the outdoor appeal.
