About This Landmark

Climbing the Third Flatiron: A Classic Climb Above Boulder

Standing proud against Boulder’s skyline, the Third Flatiron is a testament to the region’s natural beauty and climbing heritage. Its sweeping sandstone face, glowing in hues of red and gold, beckons climbers to scale its storied heights, promising a journey as memorable as the summit itself.

From the Chautauqua Trailhead, the approach trail meanders through pine groves and open meadows, a prelude to the grandeur ahead. As the Third Flatiron comes into view, its graceful lines and sheer size stir equal parts awe and anticipation.

The Standard Route, a 5.4 classic, offers a 1,200-foot adventure across nine pitches of steady climbing. The sandstone’s texture is welcoming, the holds generous, and the line unmistakable. The early pitches build confidence, each move drawing you higher above Boulder’s ever-shrinking streets. But by the middle pitches, the exposure sharpens. The wind feels alive, wrapping around you, and the city below becomes a mosaic of green and gray.

Near the top, the ridge narrows, pulling your focus into the here and now. The summit rewards your effort with panoramic views: the Rockies unfold in jagged waves to the west, and the plains stretch infinitely to the east.

The descent is no less thrilling. Two airy rappels carry you back to the earth, where the sandstone still hums faintly with the memory of your climb. For a brief moment, you feel weightless, suspended between the towering rock and the endless sky.
