About this landmark
Llaima, located near the charming town of Melipeuco in the Araucania region of Chile, is one of the most impressive active volcanoes in South America. Towering over 3,100 meters high, it stands as a dominating natural feature amid lush forests and crater lakes. Its rugged silhouette is capped with snow year-round, contrasting sharply against the clear blue sky. The volcano is part of Conguillío National Park, an area famed for its ancient Araucaria trees—known as monkey puzzle trees—and diverse wildlife.
Distinctive along this volcanic landscape are the black lava fields and steam vents that hint at its powerful geological activity. Llaima’s last eruptions, though frequent in the last century, have created a dynamic environment that supports a unique ecosystem. Visitors appreciate the sharp contrasts between volcanic rock formations and green wilderness, making it a standout destination for nature lovers and volcanology enthusiasts. Additionally, the park holds cultural importance for the local Mapuche communities who have stories and legends associated with the volcano’s fiery origins.
This destination offers visitors a blend of awe-inspiring natural beauty with an insight into ongoing natural processes. The dramatic topography and diverse terrain create a compelling place for those fascinated by volcanic activity and untouched forests. Whether from afar or on foot, Llaima invites visitors to witness a landscape shaped by fire and time in one of Chile’s most scenic regions.
