St. Martin's Island

Tropical Paradise: St. Martin’s Island, Bangladesh

St. Martin’s Island, located in the northeastern Bay of Bengal near Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, stands out as the country’s only coral island. This small island covers roughly 8 square kilometers at high tide, shrinking during low tide, and offers pristine beaches, crystal-clear blue waters, and vibrant coral reefs. Often called “Narikel Jinjira” (Coconut Island) due to its abundant coconut palms, it is situated just south of the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf peninsula, close to the Myanmar border.

The island’s key attractions include its unique coral formations and abundant marine life—colorful fish, sea turtles, and seabirds. St. Martin’s offers visitors the chance to take gentle walks along soft sandy beaches or venture into the waters for snorkeling, revealing a lively underwater world. The nearby Chhera Dwip, a smaller detached part of the island accessible by foot at low tide or by boat, boasts untouched beaches and quiet surroundings—perfect for visitors seeking a peaceful day trip.

Locals, mostly fishermen and small-scale farmers, contribute to the island’s charm, while coconut cultivation and dried fish production form the backbone of its economy. Seasonal tourism boosts the population during the winter months, especially from November to March, when the weather is most inviting. Despite some challenges like over-tourism and environmental concerns, St. Martin’s Island remains a top destination for those wanting a relaxing coastal retreat with marine wonders.

Whether enjoying a dazzling sunset over the sea or wandering quiet shores, St. Martin’s Island offers a rare chance to witness Bangladesh’s coastal beauty in a tranquil setting.
