The arch towers impressively above a steep canyon, carved from bright red and orange sandstone that glows under the sun. Its rugged formation stands out, not only for its size but for its unique placement along the Waterpocket Fold—a nearly 100-mile long geological monocline that shapes the park’s dramatic ridges and valleys.

Named after the infamous outlaw Butch Cassidy, the arch carries an intriguing cultural twist, blending natural beauty with a hint of local legend. Capitol Reef itself was established as a National Park in 1971 and is known for preserving artifacts and landscapes related to the Fremont culture as well as other Native American groups who once called this region home.

Visitors are rewarded with panoramic views of colorful canyon walls, slickrock paths, and vibrant desert flora. The final approach requires hikers to follow carefully placed rock cairns guiding them along the arch’s edge, where the views are nothing short of spectacular.

This site is popular among moderately experienced hikers who want to experience Capitol Reef’s geological wonders firsthand. For those arriving, a short drive on a dirt road brings you right to the trailhead parking, making it accessible for a rewarding day trip.
