Serene Escape at Singletary Lake State Park
Singletary Lake State Park, located near Kelly in southeastern North Carolina, offers a peaceful retreat surrounded by unique natural features rarely found in this region. The park is centered around Singletary Lake, one of the distinctive Carolina bay lakes—shallow, oval-shaped depressions with origins that remain a geological puzzle. These lakes are exclusive to the southeastern US, making this location especially notable for visitors interested in natural history and quiet water experiences. Towering cypress trees emerge directly from the water’s edge, creating striking reflections that enhance the lake’s tranquil appeal.
Established in 1936, the park maintains a charming balance of well-preserved nature and accessible amenities ideal for day visitors and groups alike. The area is popular among wildlife watchers due to its diversity of birds and small animals that thrive in the dense mix of wetlands and forest. Scenic walking trails provide easy access to the natural beauty, lined with interpretive signs that explain the lake’s origins and local plant life, offering an educational element appreciated by visitors.
Singletary Lake’s wooden pier is a favorite vantage point for fishing and quiet moments by the water. The park also features a swimming dock in good condition, adding to its family-friendly appeal. Group camping facilities, originally constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps, accommodate youth outings and community retreats, adding a historical layer to the experience. This hidden gem offers gentle walking paths, calm waters suited to canoeing, and a relaxed atmosphere that sets it apart in the North Carolina coastal plains.
Visitors often remark on the park’s peaceful sounds—the rustling wind, bird calls, and the gentle lapping of water—making it a refreshing break from urban life. Whether visiting for quiet reflection or gentle water activity, Singletary Lake State Park provides a uniquely calming setting that draws guests back season after season.
