Jones Lake State Park

Lakeside Retreat at Jones Lake State Park

Jones Lake State Park in Elizabethtown, North Carolina, stands out in the southeastern region for its calm waters and unique natural setting. This park is distinguished by one of the few remaining Carolina bay lakes, elliptical depressions whose origins remain a geological mystery. At the heart of the park lies Jones Lake, a pristine, glassy body of water surrounded by tall longleaf pine forests and native hardwoods that create a peaceful and shaded atmosphere. The lake’s sandy beach invites visitors for swimming during warmer months, while the surrounding trails meander through coastal plain habitats where rare plants like pitcher plants and Venus flytraps can be spotted.

Jones Lake State Park features a well-maintained campground with spacious sites, including electric and water hookups, alongside clean restrooms and heated showers—an appreciated amenity for extended stays. The park’s friendly staff and quiet environment make it a favorite for families and outdoor lovers seeking to unwind away from busier tourist areas. Bird watchers often enjoy quiet mornings listening to diverse local species, and anglers can appreciate the peaceful fishing spots along the shoreline.

Historically, the park is part of a series of protected Carolina bay lakes, a unique geological feature found primarily in the coastal plain of the Carolinas, adding both natural beauty and scientific curiosity to the visit. Whether arriving for a day of swimming or an overnight camping trip, Jones Lake State Park offers a serene escape with its clean facilities, scenic views, and a gentle wilderness feel that is rare in this part of North Carolina.
