Morris Island Lighthouse

Historic Coastal Landmark: Morris Island Lighthouse, Folly Beach

Morris Island Lighthouse stands just off the shore of Folly Beach, South Carolina, offering a glimpse into coastal history alongside breathtaking Atlantic views. Built in 1876, this towering structure once guided mariners through the shifting Charleston harbor waters. Over the years, natural forces have transformed its surroundings—what was once a solid land connection is now an isolated island, accessible only by water or at low tide via a sandy beach walk. Its aged brick exterior, worn by wind and surf, carries stories of naval history and changing maritime navigation methods.

The lighthouse’s location near Folly Beach provides visitors with spectacular vistas of the Atlantic Ocean, the Charleston harbor inlet, and abundant local wildlife like shorebirds. The stretch of beach leading toward the lighthouse features fine white sand and occasional driftwood, adding to the raw natural charm of the area. Visitors often comment on the peaceful ambiance and the lighthouse’s striking silhouette against colorful sunrises and sunsets. A nearby bird sanctuary adds ecological interest and explains walking restrictions in some areas, protecting local species during certain seasons.

Because the waters around Morris Island are deep and often swift, swimming near the lighthouse is discouraged, making the primary appeal its scenic beauty and photographic potential. Visitors enjoy long beach walks or paddling nearby to capture the lighthouse from different perspectives. The graffiti-covered pathway leading to the beach enhances the experience with a splash of local culture and color. Whether admired from the shore or boat, Morris Island Lighthouse remains a prominent and unforgettable symbol of South Carolina’s coastal heritage.
