Jones Gap State Park

Scenic Waterfalls & Trails at Jones Gap State Park

Jones Gap State Park, located near Marietta in South Carolina's Blue Ridge region, offers a remarkable outdoor experience unlike many others in the area. This state park is part of the larger Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area, preserving over 4,000 acres of rugged mountain terrain, pristine streams, and dense hardwood forests. What makes Jones Gap stand out is its striking combination of natural beauty and challenging trails that provide visitors with a genuine sense of adventure and solitude.

At the heart of the park is the Middle Saluda River, known for its crystal-clear waters and diverse aquatic life. Visitors can enjoy peaceful fishing spots or quiet moments beside rushing rapids and calm pools. Among its highlights is Rainbow Falls, a stunning waterfall dropping more than 100 feet over granite cliffs, praised for both its impressive height and the scenic rocky seating areas at its base where visitors often relax or picnic. Another popular natural feature is Falls Creek Falls, a shorter hike that rewards trekkers with a captivating view of cascading water surrounded by lush greenery.

The park’s landscape showcases classic Blue Ridge geology with granite outcrops and steep ridges. Native plants such as mountain laurels and rhododendrons bloom here, and wildlife sightings often include white-tailed deer and various bird species. Jones Gap also holds historical significance, with ties to Cherokee heritage and early settlers who once moved through the area. Well-marked trails accommodate hikers of differing skill levels, but many require sturdy footwear due to rocky and steep sections. This wilderness area invites those looking for an authentic mountain experience rich with both natural and cultural interest.
