Galveston Island

Coastal Wildlife & Wetlands at East End Lagoon Nature Preserve

East End Lagoon Nature Preserve is a quiet natural refuge located at the northern tip of Galveston Island, Texas. This preserve stands out because it combines coastal wetlands with a unique lagoon environment that supports diverse wildlife and provides a peaceful retreat from the busier beach areas nearby. Its mix of marshy grasslands and lagoons offers habitats for seabirds, raccoons, and many other native species, making it an important spot for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers along the Gulf Coast.

The preserve covers approximately 700 acres, mainly wetlands with a half-mile ADA-accessible trail that winds through coastal brush and palm trees. Interpretive signs along this path share insightful details about local flora and fauna, enhancing the visitor experience. This area is well known for its calm, shallow waters ideal for birdwatching and fishing rather than swimming, as strong currents and “no swimming” signs mark the shoreline.

Visitors often spot large cargo ships and ferries moving across the nearby waters, providing a unique blend of natural and maritime scenes. The beach is quiet, with plenty of shells scattered across the sand, and wildlife sightings, including a friendly raccoon family, add to its charm. Unlike the more crowded shores of Galveston Island, East End Lagoon offers open space where visitors can enjoy solitude or low-key activities.

Though the access road could use some improvement, the preserve remains a special gem for those seeking a natural setting with views of the Gulf and its coastal ecology. It’s a distinctive destination that highlights Galveston’s lesser-known wild side.
