Stunning Views at Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area
Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area spans the border of northeastern Utah and southwestern Wyoming, near the town of Manila. This area features a dramatic landscape highlighted by the striking contrast of deep red sandstone cliffs against the brilliant turquoise waters of the Flaming Gorge Reservoir, formed by the Green River Dam. The reservoir stretches over 91 miles, offering one of the largest and most scenic bodies of water in the region. The colorful rock formations date back millions of years, shaped by erosion and volcanic activity, giving the gorge its distinctive rugged appearance.
Visitors come for the impressive views from Red Canyon’s rim, the vibrant aquatic life, and the chance to see wildlife such as bighorn sheep and bald eagles along sheer canyon walls. The region’s natural beauty is amplified by the Uinta Mountains to the west, which provide a cool backdrop and diverse ecosystems from alpine forests to desert landscapes. The area carries cultural significance as well, with evidence of Native American presence and early explorer routes woven into its history. The recreation area is well known for its peaceful atmosphere and clear night skies, popular among campers who enjoy star-gazing.
From boating and fishing on the reservoir’s clear waters to hiking trails that reveal panoramic scenes, Flaming Gorge stands out as a destination where impressive geology meets outdoor activity.
