Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park

Nature’s Refuge: Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park, Florida Everglades

Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park is a remarkable natural area located near Copeland in Southwest Florida. It stands out as one of the largest and most diverse preserves in the Everglades region, showcasing an extensive subtropical wilderness that supports rare and endangered species. This park is especially notable for its ancient strand swamp, an unusual linear forest of towering cypress trees and lush hardwoods that trace an old riverbed, offering visitors a glimpse into Florida’s natural past.

Among its key features are the Big Cypress Bend Boardwalk and the East Main Tram Trail, which provide access to wetlands, cypress domes, and dense swamp forests. The preserve is famous for its rare orchids in bloom, and is among the few places where the elusive Florida panther wanders undisturbed. American alligators, white-tailed deer, and diverse birdlife, including red-tailed hawks and vultures, are frequently seen by visitors.

Established in 1974 to protect this critical habitat, the park’s landscape is dominated by slow-moving waters and ancient trees draped in Spanish moss. The 11-mile Janes Scenic Drive offers a rugged dirt road adventure through varied ecosystems. Interpretive signs educate visitors on the complex ecology of the Everglades while well-maintained boardwalks make wildlife viewing accessible and safe.

Visitors often note the peaceful atmosphere and authentic “Old Florida” experience, where wildlife encounters are common and the environment feels untouched. This preserve offers a distinctive opportunity to connect with a vital and fragile ecosystem unique to Southern Florida.
