Discover the Nebraska National Forest

Nebraska National Forest: Nature’s Unexpected Retreat in Nebraska

Situated near Chadron in northwest Nebraska, Nebraska National Forest offers an extraordinary contrast to the state’s typical flat landscapes. Unlike the sweeping prairies that dominate this region, this unique forest was hand-planted in the early 20th century, transforming the Sandhills into a thriving woodland filled with towering ponderosa pines. This man-made forest spans over 90,000 acres, providing a surprising and refreshing environment full of rolling hills, shaded trails, and diverse wildlife.

Among the most notable features is the Dismal River, a quiet waterway threading through the forest, offering serene spots for fishing and relaxation. Visitors frequently comment on the forest’s Rocky Mountain feel, with dense pine groves that create cool shade and crisp air, quite unlike the surrounding plains. The area also includes the Bessey Ranger District, home to the largest hand-planted forest in the U.S. and a historic tree nursery dating back to the 1900s.

Outdoors lovers will appreciate the countless hiking paths, off-road trails, and secluded camping sites that invite peaceful retreats. Wildlife sightings include deer, various birds, and sometimes elusive smaller animals. The star-studded skies here are spectacular, thanks to the remote location and minimal light pollution.

Visitors value the forest's quiet atmosphere during weekdays, enjoying the chance to get off the beaten path and absorb sweeping views and natural beauty. Whether hiking, mountain biking, camping, or driving through the forest, the Nebraska National Forest offers a refreshing and unexpected outdoor experience in the heart of the Sandhills.
