Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge lies along the southern edge of Virginia Beach and offers a rare glimpse into one of the East Coast’s most vital and diverse coastal ecosystems. This expansive 9,000-acre protected area features freshwater marshes, sandy dunes, maritime forests, and pristine beaches that provide refuge for a wealth of wildlife species. Established in 1938 to conserve habitat for migratory birds and other animals, the refuge remains one of the region’s premier natural destinations.

Visitors will encounter an impressive range of wildlife here, including wintering tundra swans, loggerhead sea turtles, and numerous shorebirds, making it a top spot for birdwatchers and nature lovers. The refuge’s diverse landscapes are connected by well-maintained boardwalks and trails, allowing visitors close views of marshes flourishing with native plants and animals. The dynamic interplay of saltwater and freshwater environments creates a unique habitat rare to this part of Virginia’s coastline.
