Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Kirwin National Wildlife Refuge, located in Phillips County, Kansas, spans over 10,778 acres of wetlands, grasslands, and woodlands. Created in 1954, the refuge was established primarily to provide habitat for migratory waterfowl and other wildlife species, particularly during migration seasons. The refuge lies within the Prairie Pothole Region, featuring a diverse mix of wetlands that support breeding and migratory birds, including ducks, geese, herons, and shorebirds. Aside from waterfowl, Kirwin provides important habitat for deer, wild turkey, and various songbird species.
