Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Located in the Mississippi Delta region, Coldwater National Wildlife Refuge covers nearly 2,000 acres of natural wetlands, bottomland hardwoods, and open water areas. This refuge primarily serves as a sanctuary for waterfowl, wading birds, and numerous migratory bird species. Established in 1991, the refuge plays a crucial role in the conservation of critical habitats and the protection of declining bird populations, including the endangered Interior Least Tern. Visitors to the refuge can enjoy a tranquil environment for birdwatching, with ample opportunities to view not only birds but also other wildlife such as deer and various amphibians. Although it is less developed for human recreation, the refuge's natural state offers a pristine environment perfect for photographers and nature enthusiasts eager to experience the rich biodiversity of Mississippi's wetlands.
