Mount Sentinel, located just east of the University of Montana campus in Missoula, is a beloved outdoor recreation spot known for its expansive views of the Missoula Valley. Rising to an elevation of 5,158 feet, the mountain is particularly famous for the large 'M' which is a cement structure located on the western face of the mountain. The trail to the 'M' is among the most popular, offering a short but steep hike suitable for casual hikers and families. The area surrounding Mount Sentinel is characterized by grassland habitat typical of the eastern Rockies, providing a home for various species of flora and fauna. Historically, this mountain has played an important role in local Native American tribes and as a landmark for early European settlers. Today, Mount Sentinel is part of the larger network of trails maintained by the city and university, making it a key site for both education and recreation. Visitors can explore a variety of trails leading to scenic overlooks, while also engaging in birdwatching and other outdoor pursuits.
