The Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, established in 1974, encompasses approximately 125,000 acres of the Cumberland Plateau. It is distinguished by the Capes and sandstone bluffs, along with a variety of natural arches, waterfalls, and unique geologic formations. This region supports a diverse ecosystem with extensive hardwood forests harboring an array of wildlife, including deer, black bears, and over 100 species of birds.
