Scenic Wonder: Twin Arches in Oneida, Tennessee

Twin Arches stands as a remarkable natural landmark near Oneida, Tennessee, within the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. This site features two impressive sandstone arches—the North Arch and South Arch—that rise roughly 70 feet above the forest floor and stretch across an impressive 135 feet. As some of the largest natural arches in the Eastern United States, these massive rock formations capture the attention of visitors drawn to the area's rugged beauty and geological significance.

The arches are carved from sandstone that has been shaped by natural forces over thousands of years, creating a striking formation where rock frames the skyline. The surrounding forest includes hearty species like hemlocks and pines, which thrive in the temperate mountain climate, providing a green backdrop that changes dramatically with the seasons. Fall visitors are treated to vibrant leaf colors that contrast magnificently with the warm tones of the sandstone.

Beneath the arches, hikers can find quiet trails that offer multiple vantage points to appreciate the grandeur of the formations. The site has cultural importance tied to the Cumberland Plateau, adding depth to the experience for those interested in local history. Visitors often note the well-maintained paths and the rewarding views after negotiating the steep stairways leading down to the formations.
