About Nāpali Coast State Wilderness Park

Nāpali Coast State Wilderness Park features some of Hawaii’s most dramatic coastal cliffs and remote valleys, offering rugged hiking, stunning sea caves, and pristine beaches that attract adventurers and nature lovers alike.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located on the northwest shore of Kaua'i, Nāpali Coast State Wilderness Park encompasses approximately 6,175 acres of raw natural beauty along the island’s famed Nāpali Coast. It is renowned for its towering sea cliffs rising over 4,000 feet, deeply carved valleys, emerald ridges, and remote white sand beaches accessible primarily by foot or boat. The park preserves a diverse coastal and montane ecosystem, with native plants such as ʻōhiʻa lehua and koa trees, as well as abundant seabirds and marine life. Ancient Hawaiian settlements and terraces within the valleys reflect centuries of human history and cultural significance. Outdoor recreation is dominated by the challenging Kalalau Trail, a 11-mile trek through valleys, waterfalls, and rugged terrain that ends at the secluded Kalalau Beach. Kayaking, snorkeling, and boat tours provide alternative ways to experience the sea caves and offshore reefs. The park’s wilderness designation ensures minimal development, preserving its remote, pristine character and requiring visitors to be self-reliant and prepared for demanding conditions. Due to its steep cliffs and uneven terrain, the park appeals to experienced hikers and adventurers seeking a rewarding and unforgettable encounter with one of the most spectacular coastlines in the world. Limited camping permits regulate overnight stays along the trail to protect the fragile environment and maintain a wilderness experience. Nāpali Coast State Wilderness Park remains a high-value destination for those who wish to explore striking natural beauty and Hawaiian cultural heritage in a rugged, untouched setting.
