Established in 1940 and named after Sam Houston Jones, a former Louisiana governor, the park provides a peaceful refuge for nature enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers. Visitors can explore a network of over seven miles of walking and biking trails that wind through habitats supporting various flora and fauna. The park's proximity to waterways makes it ideal for fishing, kayaking, and birdwatching—especially during migration seasons when a wide variety of bird species can be seen. Notable features include Observation Tower, which provides panoramic views of the surrounding wetlands, and the Six Mile Lake area, popular for paddling and fishing.
