It's All In the Details: Ceramic Floral Workshop with Adrienne Romero in Lake Charles

At the Imperial Calcasieu Museum (imperialcalcasieumuseum) in Lake Charles, Louisiana, 'It's All In the Details' invites adult makers to spend two evenings learning to shape ceramic florals with resident artist Adrienne Romero. Over two hands-on sessions on September 4 and 11, participants meet from 6–8 PM to transform lump clay into layered petals, textured centers and dimensional blooms that read like preserved flowers—without ever wilting. The studio is bright and practical: tables dressed with tools, tubs of slip and brushes, and walls where finished pieces hang like botanical studies. Adrienne demonstrates how movement and texture animate each petal—slipping, scoring and building forms into believable botanicals—and then coaches you through choices in scale, edge treatment and surface detail. Beginners find patient instruction; intermediate makers get one-on-one troubleshooting. The two-session format lets clay stiffen between classes so you return to refine and assemble pieces, producing a cohesive sculpture by the final evening. What makes this workshop stand out in the Lake Charles arts scene is its focus on botanical realism married to studio technique. Rather than a generic wheel lesson, the class emphasizes handbuilding: petal templates, understructure armatures, and natural textures that mimic veins and serrated edges. You leave with a finished floral object and a set of new methods—pinching, slab-building and texturing—that translate into other ceramic projects. ICM’s intimate group size (max 18) keeps the pace relaxed and the instruction personalized, while the museum context adds a civic thread: local art education in a city known for its Cajun and Creole cultural traditions. Practical details matter: wear clothes you don’t mind getting clay on, and consider bringing an apron or gloves. The sessions require no prior experience but do ask participants to attend both nights to complete their pieces. Materials and firing arrangements are handled by the museum (confirm specifics when you book). This workshop is ideal for travelers seeking a hands-on cultural experience that pairs craft with creative exploration—an evening alternative to outdoor adventure when weather or timing keeps you in town. If you’re visiting Lake Charles and want a deeper sense of place, this class connects you to a maker community and gives you a lasting souvenir made by your own hands. Each participant departs with a hardened, kiln-fired bloom—or arrangements are available for pickup after firing depending on the museum’s schedule—and returns confident to try more ambitious forms at home. The workshop is restricted to adults 18 and over and caps at 18 makers, so slots fill quickly; early booking through the provided referral link secures your place. Whether you want a tactile souvenir, a new creative hobby, or a thoughtful handmade gift, this two-evening course delivers technique, community and a tangible piece of Lake Charles art today.
