Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Saddle Mountain State Park is located in northwestern Oregon, approximately 30 miles west of Portland. The park's centerpiece is Saddle Mountain, a distinctive volcanic formation rising to 3,288 feet, making it one of the highest points in the Coast Range. The area is characterized by dense mixed conifer forests with Douglas fir, western hemlock, and cedar dominating the landscape. The park's varied habitats support wildlife including black-tailed deer, bobcats, and a variety of bird species, such as hawks and woodpeckers. The mountain is part of the Oregon Coast Range geological formation created by ancient volcanic activity and erosion over millions of years. Historically, the area was inhabited and utilized by Native American tribes before becoming public land managed by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.
