About Leadbetter Point State Park

Leadbetter Point State Park offers a unique coastal environment with diverse habitats including forest, dunes, wetlands, and beach. It is a prime destination for hiking, bird watching, and beachcombing on Washington’s Long Beach Peninsula.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located on the Long Beach Peninsula along Washington’s southwest coast, Leadbetter Point State Park protects over 850 acres of natural habitat at the northern tip of the peninsula. The park features a mixture of coastal rainforest, dune ecosystems, freshwater wetlands, and sandy Pacific Ocean beach. This convergence of environments supports an abundance of wildlife, especially migratory birds, making it a favored spot among birders during spring and fall migration. The park’s expansive sandy shoreline stretches for miles, offering extensive beachcombing, fishing, and tidepool exploration opportunities. Inland, trails wind through lush Sitka spruce and shore pine forests and connect to freshwater marshes and ponds that attract waterfowl and other wetland species. Historically, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes who thrived on the rich marine and forest resources. Today, Leadbetter Point remains largely undeveloped, emphasizing low-impact recreation to maintain its natural integrity. Visitors can hike, camp in primitive sites, and participate in wildlife observation. The park is also adjacent to the Willapa National Wildlife Refuge, enhancing the region’s conservation value. The peaceful, remote setting and wide variety of ecosystems make Leadbetter Point State Park a distinctive outdoors destination for nature enthusiasts seeking solitude and diverse habitats.
