About Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve

The Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve protects one of the largest concentrations of wintering bald eagles in North America and offers exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities in Southeast Alaska's temperate rainforest.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve encompasses approximately 48,000 acres in Southeast Alaska near the community of Haines. It includes parts of the Chilkat River Valley, which forms a critical winter habitat for thousands of bald eagles that gather here due to the area's abundant fish populations and suitable roosting areas. The preserve's geography features river floodplains, estuaries, wetlands, and forested hillsides dominated by western hemlock and Sitka spruce. This habitat supports a range of wildlife beyond bald eagles, including salmon, trumpeter swans, mountain goats, and bears. Established in 1982, the preserve is managed primarily to protect the bald eagle population, which rivals the world's largest gathering of eagles during winter months. Outdoor enthusiasts frequent the preserve for wildlife viewing, birdwatching, photography, and scenic driving along the Haines Highway. Key landmarks include the Chilkat River itself, which is renowned for its salmon runs, and various eagle roost sites that offer incredible viewing from safe distances. Visitors can also explore nearby trails and riverbanks, providing access to the rich natural environment while minimizing wildlife disturbance. The preserve attracts ornithologists, photographers, and nature lovers from around the world, especially during the peak eagle season from November through February. The Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve showcases Alaska's unique ecosystems and plays a vital role in bald eagle conservation efforts.
