Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Air Line State Park Trail follows the route of the former Air Line Railroad, stretching approximately 25 miles from East Hampton to Thompson, Connecticut. This linear park connects several communities and traverses diverse environments, including forests, wetlands, and river crossings. The trail showcases impressive stone railroad bridges, tunnels, and a distinctive steel viaduct—the highest railroad bridge in New England—over the Willimantic River in Windham. Ecologically, the trail corridor supports a variety of wildlife species, including migratory birds, white-tailed deer, and native plant communities, with expansive views of woodlands and open water along sections of the trail. Its relatively flat grade makes it accessible for walking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing during winter. The trail’s historic structures reflect Connecticut’s 19th-century railroad expansion and are points of interest for visitors. Popular access points include trailheads in towns such as East Hampton, Columbia, and Windham, each offering parking and informational kiosks. The Air Line Trail is managed by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) and operated in partnership with local municipalities and private organizations. The combination of outdoor recreation, natural scenery, and cultural history makes it a favored destination for locals and visitors seeking low-impact activities in varied seasonal settings.
