About Hā‘ena State Park

Hā‘ena State Park on Kaua‘i’s north shore offers stunning coastal views, pristine beaches, and access to the famous Kalalau Trail, making it a prime destination for hiking, swimming, and cultural exploration.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Located at the northern tip of Kaua‘i, Hā‘ena State Park spans a coastal area renowned for its natural beauty, cultural heritage, and outdoor recreation. The park overlooks the Pacific Ocean and provides access to the start of the legendary Kalalau Trail, which follows the Na Pali Coast, regarded as one of the most spectacular coastlines in the world. With dramatic sea cliffs, lush valleys, and white sand beaches like Ke‘e Beach, the park is a hub for swimmers, snorkelers, surfers, and hikers. Ecologically, the park sits within a tropical rainforest ecosystem rich with native flora and fauna, including a variety of native plants threatened by invasive species. Historically, Hā‘ena holds significant cultural importance to Native Hawaiians. The surrounding area features ancient heiau (temple) sites and other archaeological sites that reflect centuries of Hawaiian settlement and cultural practices. Access to the Kalalau Trail provides visitors the chance to journey through forested ridges and valleys to remote beaches inaccessible by road. Besides hiking, visitors can enjoy picnicking, bird watching, and community-based cultural activities. Due to its popularity, the park employs a permit system to manage visitor numbers and protect its fragile environment, enhancing the overall visitor experience while conserving natural resources.
