Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Sutton Lake Recreation Area is centered around Sutton Lake, a 1,520-acre reservoir created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for flood control, water supply, and recreation. Located in Braxton County, West Virginia, the lake’s 17 miles of shoreline provide an inviting setting for boating, fishing, swimming, and picnicking. The surrounding lands are rich with hardwood forests and rolling hills that contribute to diverse habitats supporting wildlife such as white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and various bird species. The recreation area offers developed campgrounds, picnic sites, boat ramps, and hiking trails suited for all skill levels. Historically, Sutton Lake was completed in 1961 as part of a larger network of flood control projects along the Elk River. Today, it remains a popular destination for both locals and visitors seeking outdoor recreation in a peaceful, natural setting. Watersports including kayaking and paddleboarding are especially popular on the calm waters of the lake. Wildlife enthusiasts can enjoy spotting bald eagles and migrating waterfowl. The area’s trails provide scenic views of the lake and opportunities to explore the forested landscape. Small beach areas and swimming zones provide safe water access during the warmer months. The accessibility and variety of activities make Sutton Lake Recreation Area a valuable resource in central West Virginia for outdoor recreation and family-friendly adventure.
