Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage
Round Valley Recreation Area encompasses a large reservoir built in the 1960s as part of New Jersey's water supply system, surrounded by over 4,000 acres of forested hills and valleys. The reservoir itself is one of the deepest in New Jersey, reaching depths of over 180 feet, which provides excellent conditions for trout and bass fishing. The area's terrain consists of rugged hills, exposed rock faces, and dense hardwood forests, creating diverse habitats for wildlife such as deer, wild turkey, and a variety of migratory birds. Visitors enjoy a wide range of activities, including hiking on numerous marked trails, paddling or motorboating on the clear reservoir waters, and camping at developed campgrounds. The Rockaway River flows through part of the area, adding scenic interest and additional fishing opportunities. Round Valley also offers several rock climbing spots along its ridges and bluffs. The area is a popular weekend getaway for residents of nearby urban centers seeking natural beauty and outdoor adventures. Interpretive signs and well-maintained facilities enhance the visitor experience, making it accessible for families, anglers, and adventure seekers alike. Seasonal events and easy access from major highways add to its appeal as a year-round recreational spot.
