Oconee River Greenway is an approximately 3.5-mile public greenway that follows the Oconee River through the city of Milledgeville in central Georgia. The trail offers visitors a combination of natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and historical context along its paved and boardwalk pathways. The greenway stretches from the Lake Sinclair Dam near the northern end down south to Nancy Guinn Memorial Park, showcasing the river's floodplain wetlands, hardwood forests, and native wildlife habitat. This area is ecologically significant as it supports species such as herons, kingfishers, turtles, and various fish populations inhabiting the river and adjacent wetlands. Historically, the location lies near the Old Governor's Mansion and the historic district of Milledgeville, once Georgia’s state capital, providing a backdrop of cultural heritage alongside natural scenery. Recreation enthusiasts enjoy walking, jogging, cycling, birdwatching, fishing from designated spots, and kayaking or canoeing access to the Oconee River. The greenway also connects several parks and landmarks, facilitating community events and environmental education programs. Its flat to gently rolling terrain and well-maintained trails make it accessible for people of all ages and abilities. The greenway's design includes benches, interpretive signage, and river overlooks, inviting both active use and quiet enjoyment of the river corridor. The Oconee River Greenway is a vital urban open space fostering outdoor activity, nature appreciation, and conservation awareness within Milledgeville and its surrounding communities.
