About Finger Lake State Recreation Area

Finger Lake State Recreation Area offers a peaceful destination in central Illinois, featuring a large lake ideal for fishing and boating alongside diverse hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Finger Lake State Recreation Area is located in Fulton County, Illinois, approximately 10 miles north of Lewistown. The area is centered around Finger Lake, a 140-acre man-made lake created by damming Dry Run Creek. The landscape includes rolling hills, oak-hickory woodlands, mixed grasslands, wetlands, and prairie restorations that provide excellent habitat for a variety of wildlife species. The park covers over 2,100 acres, making it a significant natural area in the region. History-wise, the land was acquired by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources with the purpose of both protecting natural resources and supplying high-quality outdoor recreational opportunities.

Visitors to Finger Lake can engage in various activities including fishing, camping, hiking, mountain biking, and water-based recreation such as kayaking and canoeing. The lake is stocked with largemouth bass, channel catfish, and other sport fish, attracting anglers year-round. Several miles of multi-use trails wind through the woodlands and prairies, offering opportunities to observe deer, wild turkeys, and migrating birds.

The park is popular for its quiet natural setting, making it a favored spot for bird watching and photography. Its campground offers both developed and primitive camping sites. Notable landmarks include the large lake itself and several scenic overlooks that provide panoramic views of the surrounding natural landscape. The park's relatively remote location and well-maintained facilities make it an appealing destination for families, outdoor enthusiasts, and nature lovers looking for a getaway in central Illinois.
