Blue Marsh Lake Recreation Area is a 5,000-acre managed reservoir and surrounding lands located near Reading, Pennsylvania. Created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the 1970s for flood control on the Tulpehocken Creek, the lake now serves as a hub for a variety of outdoor activities. The recreation area features over 18 miles of trails that wind through woodlands, meadows, and wetlands, providing habitat for a diverse range of flora and fauna including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and migratory birds. Anglers are drawn to Blue Marsh Lake’s healthy populations of bass, trout, and catfish. The lake also supports non-motorized and motorized boating, with multiple boat launches and marinas available. Visitors can camp at developed campgrounds nearby, enjoy picnicking, and explore scenic overlooks offering views of the water and surrounding hills. The area's mix of open water and wooded uplands makes it appealing for birdwatchers and nature photographers. Seasonal fishing tournaments, educational programs, and special events hosted by the Army Corps of Engineers enhance visitor engagement. Blue Marsh Lake Recreation Area is accessible year-round and is a key destination for outdoor enthusiasts in the Reading region seeking water-based activities, hiking, and wildlife viewing.
