About Pribilof Islands

The Pribilof Islands are a remote cluster of volcanic islands in the Bering Sea, renowned for their unique Arctic ecosystem, abundant seabird colonies, and large northern fur seal populations.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

The Pribilof Islands comprise four volcanic islands—St. Paul, St. George, Otter, and Walrus—located approximately 200 miles north of the Aleutian Islands in the Bering Sea. These islands cover roughly 77 square miles and are globally significant for their rich marine and avian wildlife, including one of the largest northern fur seal rookeries and vast colonies of seabirds such as puffins, auklets, and gulls. The terrain is rugged and volcanic, characterized by steep cliffs, tundra landscapes, and volcanic cones. The islands have a sparse human population concentrated mainly in the communities of St. Paul and St. George. Historically, the islands were harvested extensively for their fur seals by Russian traders in the 18th and 19th centuries, and today they are part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. Outdoor recreation here is limited and primarily focused on wildlife viewing, photography, and eco-tourism due to the islands' fragile ecosystem and remote location. Visitors are drawn to the incredible wildlife spectacles, such as seal haul-outs, puffin nesting sites, and the chance to witness rare Arctic species. Notable landmarks include the Seal and Bird Hills and the volcanic highlands on St. Paul, with limited but valuable hiking trails that allow close encounters with wildlife. The islands' remoteness, harsh weather conditions, and strict conservation measures ensure that this unique refuge remains pristine, offering an extraordinary experience for adventurous travelers and naturalists interested in the Arctic marine environment.
