About Tochal Protected Area

Tochal Protected Area

Tochal Protected Area is a mountainous region located on the northern edge of Tehran, Iran, forming a natural barrier between the metropolitan city and the vast Alborz mountain range. Centered around Mount Tochal, which reaches an elevation of 3,964 meters (13,005 feet), this protected area serves as a vital recreational and ecological zone for residents and visitors alike. The area features a diverse landscape of alpine meadows, pine and juniper forests, rocky outcrops, and snow-covered slopes during winter. Tochal is historically significant as a longstanding natural retreat from the urban environment of Tehran and is highly accessible due to its proximity to the city’s northern districts. A key attraction of the area is the Tochal Telecabin, one of the longest gondola lift systems in the Middle East, which carries visitors from Shemshak area at the base to near the summit, providing spectacular panoramic views of Tehran and the surrounding mountains. The region supports a variety of outdoor activities across seasons, including hiking, mountain climbing, skiing, snowboarding, paragliding, and nature observation. Several well-marked trails lead to mountain shelters, the Tochal ski resort, and the summit, where visitors can experience high-altitude environments without traveling far from an urban center. Wildlife includes species typical of the Alborz range, such as wild goats and diverse bird species. Given rapid urban expansion, Tochal Protected Area offers essential green space for both ecology and public health. Its combination of accessible wilderness, scenic vistas, and recreational infrastructure make it a key destination for outdoor enthusiasts in Iran.
