About Cape Horn Natural Park

Cape Horn Natural Park is a remote, rugged reserve located at the southernmost tip of South America, offering visitors dramatic landscapes, rich wildlife, and a gateway to true subantarctic wilderness.

Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Cape Horn Natural Park lies on Navarino Island in Chile’s Tierra del Fuego archipelago and encompasses the iconic Cape Horn, the southernmost headland of the Americas. Its geography is marked by steep cliffs, windswept forests, peat bogs, and pristine fjords influenced by the wild seas of the Drake Passage. The park protects one of the last remaining examples of subantarctic ecosystems including evergreen Magellanic forests composed mainly of lenga and coihue trees, moss-covered peatlands, and diverse marine habitats. Historically, Cape Horn was a notorious navigation point for sailing ships prior to the opening of the Panama Canal, and it retains strong maritime heritage. Visitors can explore rugged hiking trails, kayak in sheltered bays, and observe unique wildlife such as southern sea lions, marine birds like the black-browed albatross, and elusive southern pudús. The park serves as a critical destination for birdwatching, with residents of rare species and migratory seabirds. Key landmarks include the Cape Horn Lighthouse atop the dramatic cliffs and the Yendegaia Valley gateway. Due to its remote location and challenging weather—marked by strong westerly winds and frequent rain—Cape Horn Natural Park offers a truly wild adventure experience. It appeals mostly to seasoned travelers seeking dramatic landscapes, maritime history, and ecological diversity in one of the planet's most pristine southern wilds.
