Wilderness Landscape & Natural Heritage

Yawkey Wildlife Preserve, located on South Carolina's coast, covers more than 24,000 acres of protected land. It is an exceptional sanctuary for wildlife conservation, acting as a crucial habitat for a wide variety of species, including threatened and endangered birds such as the red-cockaded woodpecker. Historically, the land was bequeathed by Tom Yawkey, the former owner of the Boston Red Sox, and has been maintained to preserve its natural beauty and ecological importance. The preserve encompasses a variety of landscapes, from dense maritime forests to expansive salt marshes and pristine beaches. Visitors have the opportunity to engage in wildlife viewing, particularly birdwatching, as the preserve plays host to migratory and resident bird species. Plant species range from lush live oaks draped in Spanish moss to the hardy salt-tolerant grasses of the marshes.
